Common Mistakes When Checking Linguaskill Scores
Confusing Linguaskill Business with Linguaskill General. Both use the Cambridge English Scale (82-180), but Business uses workplace content while General uses everyday and academic content. They are different tests with different content. Make sure you are using the right variant for your purpose.
Treating IELTS and TOEFL conversions as exact. No official concordance table exists between Linguaskill and IELTS or TOEFL. The conversions shown here use CEFR as an intermediate step and are approximate. Your actual score on a different test format could differ significantly.
Not checking per-module requirements. Many business schools require minimum scores in each of the three modules, not just the overall level. A strong Reading and Listening score with a low Speaking score may still result in rejection.
Assuming Linguaskill is accepted for immigration. Linguaskill is NOT on the IRCC list for Canadian Express Entry. It is not accepted for Australian student visas or skilled migration. It is primarily a business English certification, not an immigration test.
Frequently Asked Questions
This converter maps your three Linguaskill Business module scores to CEFR levels, approximate IELTS bands, and approximate TOEFL scores. It then checks your results against common business school and professional certification requirements.
Linguaskill Business reports scores on the Cambridge English Scale, which ranges from 82 to 180. Each score maps directly to a CEFR level:
CEFR Level = Lookup(Score) from Cambridge English Scale
Where 180 = C2, 160-179 = C1, 140-159 = B2, 120-139 = B1, 100-119 = A2, and 82-99 = A1. There is no weighting, averaging, or calculation involved in the CEFR mapping. Each module score independently determines its own CEFR level.
IELTS and TOEFL conversions use CEFR as an intermediate step, because no direct concordance table exists between Linguaskill and those tests:
IELTS Approx. = CEFR_to_IELTS(Lookup(Score))
TOEFL Approx. = CEFR_to_TOEFL(Lookup(Score))
Important: The IELTS and TOEFL conversions are approximate. They are derived from CEFR intermediate mapping, not from direct concordance research. Your actual score on a different test format could be higher or lower depending on your familiarity with that specific test.
Linguaskill Business tests your English in a professional context using three modules:
Reading and Listening (combined module): This computer-adaptive test presents questions of varying difficulty based on your responses. It covers business emails, reports, charts, articles, and presentations. A single combined score is produced because Reading and Listening questions are interspersed throughout the test session.
Writing:This separate module asks you to write business emails and short reports based on workplace scenarios. You are assessed on how well you structure your writing, use appropriate business vocabulary, and address the task requirements within the time limit.
Speaking:This module involves a live assessment with a human examiner. You respond to workplace scenarios, give short presentations, and participate in professional conversations. You are assessed on fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary range, and grammatical accuracy.
Level descriptions: A score of 180 (C2) indicates exceptional professional English. A score of 160-179 (C1) means you can handle complex business communication confidently. A score of 140-159 (B2) shows competent independent business English. A score of 120-139 (B1) indicates basic workplace English with some limitations. Below 120 (A2 or A1) is below the level most employers and programs require.
Linguaskill Business for UK Programs and VisasThe UK has historically been the strongest market for Linguaskill Business and its predecessor, BULATS:
UK MBA programs:Many UK business schools, including some at Russell Group universities, accept Linguaskill Business for MBA admissions. The typical requirement is CEFR C1 (score 160 or above) in all three modules. Some schools accept CEFR B2 (score 140+) for undergraduate business programs.
UK work visas:Linguaskill was previously accepted for UK Tier 2 General work visas at CEFR B1 level (score 120 or above in all modules). The UK visa system has since been restructured. Check the current UK government approved test list to confirm whether Linguaskill is still accepted for your specific visa category.
Professional registration:Certain UK professional bodies, particularly in accounting, engineering, and healthcare management, have accepted Linguaskill as evidence of English proficiency for membership or licensure.
Note:For UK student visas, Linguaskill is not accepted. You need IELTS UKVI, PTE Academic, or TOEFL iBT. For work visas, always verify current acceptance on the UK government website before booking your test.
Canada presents a complicated picture for Linguaskill test takers:
University admissions:A small number of Canadian universities, particularly for MBA and business programs, may accept Linguaskill Business scores at CEFR B2 (score 140+). This is program-specific and not universal. Most Canadian universities prefer IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic, or CAEL.
Immigration:Linguaskill is NOT on the IRCC approved test list for Express Entry (FSW, CEC, or FST). It is also not accepted for Canadian study permits at the federal level. If you need an English test for any Canadian immigration pathway, Linguaskill will not work. Use IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL, or CAEL instead.
Critical:Do not take Linguaskill if your primary goal is Canadian immigration. You will not be able to use the result for Express Entry or study permit applications. This is the single most important limitation of this test.
Australia:Linguaskill is not accepted for Australian student visas (Subclass 500) or skilled migration visas (Subclass 189, 190, 491). The standard tests for Australia are IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, and Cambridge CAE. A small number of Australian business colleges may consider Linguaskill for non-award programs, but this is rare.
New Zealand:Linguaskill has limited recognition in New Zealand. It is not accepted for immigration purposes. Some business schools may consider it for direct admission, but IELTS and PTE Academic are far more common and safer choices.
United States:Linguaskill has very limited recognition in the US. A small number of executive education programs at US business schools may accept it, but TOEFL is the universal standard for US university admissions.
Ireland:Linguaskill is not widely recognized in Ireland for university admissions or employment permits. IELTS is the standard test for both purposes.
Tip:For corporate English assessment within multinational companies operating in Europe, Linguaskill Business is well-suited because Cambridge is well-established in European professional development. For any application outside corporate assessment, IELTS or PTE Academic provide significantly broader recognition.

Why is Reading and Listening a combined score? Linguaskill uses a computer-adaptive format where Reading and Listening questions are interspersed in a single test session. The algorithm adjusts question difficulty based on your responses. A single combined score is produced for this module because the two skills cannot be separated in the scoring.
Can I use Linguaskill for non-business university programs? Some universities accept Linguaskill for general admission, but this is much less common than accepting IELTS or TOEFL. For non-business programs, Linguaskill Business is less likely to be recognized than the General variant or other major tests. Check with each specific university before relying on it.
What if my module scores are very uneven? This is a common situation. Many test takers score higher on Reading and Listening than on Speaking or Writing. Most institutions set minimum scores for each module individually, so a low Speaking score can prevent you from meeting the requirement even with strong Reading and Listening results. If retaking, focus on your weakest module since Linguaskill allows retaking individual modules.
How does Linguaskill compare to Cambridge FCE, CAE, and CPE?All of these tests report on the same Cambridge English Scale, so the scores are directly comparable. Linguaskill 160 is the same level as CAE grade B or C (C1). Linguaskill 140 is the same level as FCE grade A or B (B2). The key difference is content: Linguaskill uses business scenarios, while FCE, CAE, and CPE use general academic content.
Can I retake individual modules?Yes. You can retake individual Linguaskill modules (Reading and Listening, Writing, or Speaking) without retaking the others. This is a practical advantage over tests like IELTS where you must retake all four sections together, though IELTS now also allows one-skill retakes.
How long are Linguaskill results valid?Linguaskill results are valid for two years from the test date. This aligns with the standard validity period for most English language tests. Some institutions may set shorter acceptance windows.
Is Linguaskill easier than IELTS?Many test takers find Linguaskill easier because the adaptive format gives questions at an appropriate difficulty level, and the business content feels more practical than IELTS academic content. However, the Speaking module requires a live conversation with an examiner, which some test takers find more stressful than IELTS recorded speaking. The Writing module requires producing business documents under time pressure. Difficulty is subjective and depends on your individual strengths.
Tip:Take the free Linguaskill practice test on the Cambridge website before your actual test. This helps you understand the adaptive format and the types of business scenarios you will encounter. The practice test also gives you an approximate score range before you pay for the real test.
