How This Checker Works

This tool uses a database of minimum English proficiency requirements compiled from the official admissions pages of universities in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland. When you select your country, course level, and test, it shows you:

  • The minimum overall score required
  • Minimum sub-scores for writing, speaking, reading, and listening (where applicable)
  • What that score level means in plain terms
  • Whether your score is likely to be accepted or borderline

The requirements shown reflect the typical minimum across mainstream universities. Highly competitive or specialist institutions (Oxford, MIT, medicine programs) often require higher scores. Always verify with the specific university before you apply.

How scores relate to each other:
IELTS 6.5 is roughly equivalent to TOEFL iBT 79-93, PTE Academic 58-64, Duolingo 105-115, and Cambridge C1 Advanced (pass). These conversions are approximate and some universities accept them differently.

Score Requirements by Country

United Kingdom

UK universities use IELTS Academic as the most widely accepted test. Most universities require at least IELTS 6.0 overall for undergraduate study, with 6.5 being the most common threshold. Postgraduate programs typically start at 6.5 and go up to 7.5 for research degrees. Medicine, law, and clinical nursing programs almost always require 7.0 with no individual band (listening, reading, writing, speaking) below 7.0.

TOEFL iBT is accepted at the majority of UK universities, usually with a minimum of 87 to 100. PTE Academic scores of 58 to 65 are equivalent to IELTS 6.5 and are accepted at most institutions. The Duolingo English Test is accepted at a growing number of UK universities, though not yet universally, and typically requires 105 to 120 depending on the course level.

United States

US universities tend to have wider variation in their English requirements compared to the UK. Community colleges often accept TOEFL 61 or IELTS 5.5, while competitive research universities like those in the Ivy League typically require TOEFL 100 to 110 or IELTS 7.0 to 7.5. Postgraduate programs in STEM, business, and the humanities vary significantly by program and institution.

PTE Academic is gaining acceptance at US universities, particularly for master’s programs. Duolingo scores of 110 to 125 are accepted at a large number of US institutions, making it increasingly popular among international students as a faster and cheaper alternative.

Canada

Canadian universities, including Toronto, UBC, and McGill, typically require IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 for undergraduate programs. Many postgraduate programs require 7.0 or higher. TOEFL minimums for most Canadian universities fall between 90 and 105 iBT. Quebec-based universities such as McGill require TOEFL 90 at minimum for English-taught programs.

PTE Academic is accepted at most Canadian universities. Duolingo acceptance is growing but not yet as universal as in the US. If you are applying to a college rather than a degree-granting university, requirements are often lower, typically IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80.

Australia

Australian universities are among the most flexible in accepting multiple test formats. IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 is the standard entry point for undergraduate study, and 6.5 to 7.0 for postgraduate. The Group of Eight universities (including Melbourne and Sydney) typically require 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 for undergraduate, and 7.0 for many postgraduate programs.

PTE Academic is widely accepted across Australia. TOEFL requirements typically range from 79 to 94. Duolingo is accepted at several Australian universities with scores of 105 to 120 being typical. Medicine and law require higher scores, usually IELTS 7.0 with no band below 7.0.

New Zealand

New Zealand institutions like the University of Auckland and Victoria University of Wellington require IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 for undergraduate entry. Foundation programs may accept as low as 5.5. Postgraduate requirements range from 6.5 to 7.0. TOEFL iBT minimums are typically 80 to 90. PTE Academic scores of 50 to 65 cover most levels from foundation to postgraduate.

Ireland

Irish universities such as University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin typically require IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 for undergraduate programs and 6.5 to 7.0 for postgraduate. TOEFL iBT requirements are generally 80 to 100. Note that students from countries where English is not an official language must submit proficiency scores regardless of their prior education medium.

Pro tip: If you are borderline, check whether the university offers a pre-sessional English program. These are intensive English courses (usually 5 to 12 weeks) that let you join your main degree with a slightly lower test score if you pass the pre-sessional successfully.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Mistake 1: Checking only the overall score. Most universities also require a minimum score in each individual skill (writing, speaking, reading, listening). You can score 7.0 overall in IELTS and still get rejected if your writing band is 5.5. Always check sub-score requirements.

Mistake 2: Using a general training test instead of academic. IELTS has two versions: Academic and General Training. Universities almost always require IELTS Academic. General Training is used for visa and migration purposes only.

Mistake 3: Using an expired score. IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE scores are valid for two years from the test date. If your score expires before you matriculate, you will need to retake the test. Plan your test date accordingly.

Mistake 4: Assuming Duolingo is accepted everywhere. Duolingo acceptance has grown significantly but is still not universal, especially in the UK and for medicine and law programs. Check the specific course page, not just the university homepage.

Mistake 5: Applying with the department minimum when the faculty sets a higher bar. University websites sometimes show a general minimum, but individual departments and programs can and do set higher thresholds. Check the program page directly, not just the university-wide admissions page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Cambridge exams (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency) instead of IELTS?

Yes, at many universities. Cambridge C1 Advanced with a grade B or C is roughly equivalent to IELTS 6.5 to 7.0. Cambridge C2 Proficiency is equivalent to IELTS 8.0 and above. UK universities tend to accept Cambridge exams more readily than universities in the US or Australia. Check your specific program page to confirm.

What if my score is one point below the requirement?

It depends on the university and program. Some will make an offer conditional on meeting the requirement by a specified date. Others will not. Your best move is to contact the admissions office directly, ask if they have any flexibility or a conditional offer process, and check whether a pre-sessional course is an option.

Does IELTS Academic and IELTS UKVI differ?

The test content is identical. IELTS UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) is a version taken at approved test centres and is specifically required by UKVI for student visa purposes. For the English language requirement of the course itself, IELTS Academic is usually sufficient. For the visa application, the university will tell you if IELTS UKVI is needed.

My previous degree was taught in English. Do I still need a test?

Possibly not. Many universities exempt applicants who have completed a degree (or a certain number of years of education) taught entirely in English in a country where English is an official language. The rules vary. Some UK universities exempt graduates from Nigeria, India, or South Africa. Others do not. Check the specific exemptions list on the university admissions page.

Is TOEFL or IELTS better for UK universities?

IELTS is the more widely accepted option for UK universities, particularly for visa purposes. TOEFL is accepted at most UK universities but some smaller or specialist institutions still prefer or require IELTS. If you are applying to the UK, IELTS is the safer choice unless you have a specific reason to take TOEFL.

How long does it take to improve from IELTS 5.5 to 6.5?

This varies a lot by individual. On average, moving up one full IELTS band requires 200 to 400 hours of focused study. For most people studying consistently (10 to 15 hours per week), that is 3 to 6 months of preparation. Writing tends to be the slowest skill to improve. Start early and focus on your weakest band.
