How the PTE Academic Score Calculator Works
PTE Academic reports scores for four communicative skills: Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. Each is scored from 10 to 90. The overall score is the average of all four, rounded to the nearest whole number.

PTE Score Requirements by Country and Purpose
Australia: University Admissions
PTE Academic is widely and enthusiastically accepted at Australian universities. Most universities require an overall score of 50 to 58 for foundation programs, 58 to 65 for undergraduate programs, and 65 to 72 for postgraduate programs. The Group of Eight universities typically require 65 to 72 overall for undergraduate entry and 65 to 79 for postgraduate.
Australia: General Skilled Migration
For Australian migration visas (subclass 189, 190, and 491), the Department of Home Affairs defines four levels of English proficiency using PTE scores. Functional English (required for most family visas) requires PTE 30+. Vocational English (for subclass 482 employer-sponsored) requires PTE 36 in each skill. Competent English (required for most skilled migration visas) requires PTE 50 in each communicative skill. Proficient English (earns 10 bonus migration points) requires PTE 65 in each. Superior English (earns 20 bonus points) requires PTE 79 in each.
United Kingdom: University Admissions
PTE Academic is accepted at most UK universities for student visa and admissions purposes. Typical requirements are 51 to 58 overall for undergraduate entry and 58 to 65 overall for postgraduate. The student visa route accepts PTE Academic (not the UKVI version) for most universities. For highly competitive courses or institutions, some may require 65 to 72 or higher.
United Kingdom: Visa Applications
For UK work visas (Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker) and family visas, you must take the PTE Academic UKVI version at an approved UKVI test centre. Standard PTE Academic is NOT accepted for UK immigration purposes. The minimum for the Skilled Worker visa is PTE Academic UKVI with 51 in each skill (equivalent to CEFR B1).
Canada
PTE Academic is accepted at most Canadian universities for student admission purposes. However, PTE is not accepted for Canadian permanent residency or Express Entry applications. Canadian immigration requires IELTS General Training or CELPIP General. New Zealand

Ireland

Common PTE Mistakes
Mistake 1: Taking standard PTE Academic for a UK work or family visa. Standard PTE Academic is NOT a Secure English Language Test (SELT) for UK immigration. You must book PTE Academic UKVI at an approved UKVI centre. The test content is identical, but the administration requirements differ. Using the wrong version means your score will be rejected by UKVI.
Mistake 2: Meeting the PTE overall score but failing individual skill minimums. For Australian migration and many UK visa categories, each communicative skill score must individually meet the minimum, not just the overall average. A single low skill score fails the requirement regardless of the overall. Check your weakest skill first.
Mistake 3: Confusing overall PTE score with communicative skill scores. Your PTE score report shows both communicative skill scores (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening) and enabling skill scores (Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary, Written Discourse). Universities and immigration authorities use the communicative skill scores. The enabling skills are feedback on specific areas but are not the primary evidence scores.
Mistake 4: Not verifying score validity before applying. PTE Academic scores are valid for two years from the test date. Australian immigration (Department of Home Affairs) is an exception: it accepts scores up to three years old for immigration applications. For all other purposes (universities, UK and NZ immigration), the standard two-year window applies.
Mistake 5: Ignoring the Oral Fluency and Pronunciation enabling skills. Low scores in Oral Fluency or Pronunciation drag down your Speaking communicative skill score significantly. Many test takers focus on content accuracy in speaking tasks while speaking haltingly or with a heavily accented delivery. Practice speaking at a natural rhythm and pace; the algorithm rewards fluency heavily.

Is PTE harder than IELTS?
Neither test is inherently harder. They test the same underlying skills but in different formats. PTE is entirely computer-based, including Speaking (you speak to a microphone, not a person). Many test takers find PTE Speaking less stressful because there is no examiner in the room. IELTS Reading is often considered more difficult because it requires more background reading skills. PTE’s time pressure is generally higher per task. Which is harder depends entirely on the individual.
Can I use PTE for the NHS or UK healthcare jobs?
Yes. PTE Academic (UKVI version) is accepted for NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) registration in the UK. The NMC requires a minimum of 65 in each of the four communicative skills. For HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) registration, PTE UKVI is also accepted with similar thresholds. How long does it take to get PTE results?
PTE Academic results are typically available within 1 to 5 business days after the test. This is significantly faster than IELTS (3 to 13 days depending on format) and TOEFL (4 to 8 days). PTE is often recommended for applicants with tight deadlines for this reason.
What is the difference between PTE Academic and PTE Core?
PTE Academic is the version accepted for university admissions and immigration in Australia, New Zealand, UK, and Canada. PTE Core is a newer version designed specifically for Canadian immigration and is accepted by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) for permanent residency applications.
