Common Mistakes When Checking PTE Scores
Averaging your four scores does not give your official overall score. Pearson calculates the overall from item-level responses. A weighted average is only an estimate. Your real overall might differ by 1 to 3 points.
Confusing enabling skill scores with communicative skill scores. Grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, and written discourse are enabling skills. They do not have a direct score requirement for visas or universities.
Not checking minimum subtest scores. Many visas and universities require a minimum score in each skill, not just the overall. A high overall with one weak skill can still result in a rejection.
Using outdated PTE to IELTS conversion tables. Pearson updated their concordance table. PTE 65 now maps to IELTS 7.0 (previously some sources listed it as 6.5). Always use the latest official mapping.
Frequently Asked Questions
This calculator estimates your PTE Academic overall score using a weighted average of your four communicative skill scores. It also converts each skill score into its IELTS band equivalent and Canadian CLB level, then checks your results against common visa and university requirements.
Pearson does not publish the exact formula used to calculate the official overall score. The overall score is generated from individual item responses, and some question types contribute to more than one communicative skill. This means a simple average of your four subtest scores will not perfectly match your official result.
The weighted average formula used here is:
Overall = (Listening x 0.341) + (Reading x 0.246) + (Speaking x 0.227) + (Writing x 0.186)
The weights reflect the approximate contribution of each communicative skill based on analysis of the PTE test structure. Listening carries the highest weight because it contributes to more question types than any other skill. Writing carries the lowest weight.
Important: This is an estimate, not an official calculation. Your real PTE overall score may differ by 1 to 3 points in either direction. Use this calculator for planning and preparation, not as a substitute for your official score report.
The PTE Academic scale runs from 10 to 90. Each score level corresponds to a description of your English ability:
79 to 90 (Expert): You can communicate fluently and accurately in demanding academic and professional situations. You handle complex language with precision. This level gives you Superior English for Australian immigration (20 additional points) and satisfies the highest requirements of top universities.
65 to 78 (Competent): You can communicate effectively in most academic and professional contexts. Occasional errors do not impede understanding. This is the minimum for Australian skilled visas (Subclass 189 and 190) and maps to IELTS 7.0.
58 to 64 (Capable): You can handle most situations but may struggle with complex or unfamiliar language. This level meets some university requirements and maps to IELTS 6.5.
50 to 57 (Vocational): You can communicate in straightforward situations but make noticeable errors. This is the minimum for Australian Subclass 491 visa and maps to IELTS 6.0.
10 to 49 (Limited): Your English ability limits you to basic communication. Significant improvement is needed before you can meet academic or immigration requirements.
PTE Score Requirements by CountryDifferent countries and programs set their own minimum PTE score requirements. Below is a breakdown of the most common thresholds for the six target countries.
AustraliaAustralia has the most clearly defined PTE score tiers for immigration purposes:
Superior English (PTE 79 each skill): Awards 20 points in the skilled migration points test. Required for some professional registrations and preferred for competitive visa rounds.
Proficient English (PTE 65 each skill): Awards 10 points. Accepted for Subclass 189 and 190 visa applications at the minimum threshold.
Competent English (PTE 50 each skill): Awards 0 points but satisfies the baseline English requirement for Subclass 189 and 190. Also the minimum for Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional).
Student Visa (Subclass 500): No government-set minimum; the requirement depends on your education provider. Most universities require PTE 50 to 58 for undergraduate programs and 58 to 65 for postgraduate programs.
United KingdomStudent Visa (degree level and above): PTE 59 in each skill (B2 level). This is the UK Home Office minimum; your university may require a higher score.
Student Visa (below degree level): PTE 43 in each skill (B1 level).
Skilled Worker Visa: PTE 50 in each skill (B1 level) for most eligible occupations.
Health and Care Worker Visa: PTE 50 in each skill (B1 level) for most healthcare roles.
CanadaCanada uses the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) system. PTE scores are mapped to CLB levels for Express Entry and other immigration programs:
Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker): Minimum CLB 7 in each skill, which requires PTE 59 in each skill. Higher CLB levels give more points: CLB 9 (PTE 84) or CLB 10 (PTE 89) maximizes your language score.
Study Permit: No federal minimum. Each university sets its own requirement, commonly PTE 50 to 65.
New ZealandSkilled Migrant Category: Overall score of at least 58 with no subtest below 50. Some professions may require higher scores through their registration bodies.
Student Visa: No government-set minimum; determined by your education provider. Universities commonly require PTE 42 to 58.
United StatesThe US does not have a government-set PTE requirement. Requirements are set by individual institutions:
Top universities (Ivy League, top 50): PTE 70 or higher overall, with no subtest below 65.
Mid-tier universities: PTE 53 to 68 overall.
Graduate programs: PTE 65 to 70 overall. Some MBA and engineering programs may require higher scores.
IrelandUniversity admission: Most Irish universities require PTE 55 to 65 for undergraduate programs and PTE 60 to 65 for postgraduate programs. Each institution sets its own threshold.
Tip: Always check the exact requirement directly with the immigration authority or university. Requirements change, and some programs have additional conditions like minimum scores in specific skills. A high overall score with one weak skill may not be enough.
Pearson publishes an official concordance table that maps PTE scores to IELTS bands. The current mapping is:
| PTE Score | IELTS Band | CEFR Level |
|---|---|---|
| 86-90 | 9.0 | C2 |
| 83-85 | 8.5 | C2 |
| 79-82 | 8.0 | C1 |
| 73-78 | 7.5 | C1 |
| 65-72 | 7.0 | C1 |
| 58-64 | 6.5 | B2 |
| 50-57 | 6.0 | B2 |
| 42-49 | 5.5 | B2 |
| 36-41 | 5.0 | B1 |
| 30-35 | 4.5 | B1 |
The Canadian government (IRCC) has its own mapping from PTE to CLB levels. This is different from the IELTS conversion and should be used specifically for Canadian immigration applications:
| CLB Level | PTE Score | Express Entry Points |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 89+ | 32-34 |
| 9 | 84-88 | 31 |
| 8 | 79-83 | 29-30 |
| 7 | 59-75 | 23-28 |
| 6 | 54-58 | 18-22 |
| 5 | 46-53 | 16-17 |
| 4 | 36-45 | 15 |
Note: The CLB ranges for PTE are not always even. For example, CLB 7 covers PTE 59 to 75, a wide 17-point range. This is because Pearson’s scoring granularity does not align neatly with the CLB scale. Use the IRCC official table for exact mapping.
| Speaking | Writing | Reading | Listening | Est. Overall | Au. 189 Visa |

| 79 | 79 | 79 | 82 | 80 | Yes |
| 65 | 65 | 68 | 70 | 67 | Yes |
| 72 | 65 | 70 | 48 | 62 | No |
| 58 | 55 | 60 | 62 | 59 | No |
| 50 | 50 | 52 | 55 | 52 | No |
| 85 | 82 | 88 | 90 | 87 | Yes |
| 65 | 64 | 65 | 65 | 65 | Yes |
Can my estimated overall be different from my official score? Yes. The weighted average is an approximation. Differences of 1 to 3 points are normal. In rare cases, the difference can be larger if your score profile is very uneven (for example, a very high Listening score combined with a very low Writing score). This happens because some PTE items contribute to multiple skills, and the interaction between skills is not linear.
What if my scores are uneven? An uneven profile (for example, Listening 82, Speaking 65, Reading 60, Writing 50) can make the estimated overall less accurate. The calculator will still produce a result, but treat it with more caution. For visa applications, focus on whether each individual skill meets the minimum, not just the overall.
Do all skills need to meet the minimum, or just the overall? For virtually all immigration pathways and university admissions, each communicative skill must independently meet the stated minimum. A high overall score with one skill below the threshold will not be accepted. This is why the requirement check in this calculator evaluates each skill separately.
What if I scored below 10? PTE Academic scores start at 10. A score below 10 is not possible on the official test. If you are seeing estimated scores below 10 from a practice test, the practice platform may use a different scale.
Does the PTE score for the UK Home Office differ from the regular PTE Academic score? Since April 2020, the UK Home Office accepts PTE Academic (the standard test, not a separate UKVI version). You take the same test and submit the same score report. There is no separate “PTE UKVI” test.
How to Improve Your PTE ScoreIf your scores are below your target, focus on the specific skills and question types where you lost points. PTE is a computer-scored test, which means preparation can be highly targeted.
Speaking: This skill often has the highest impact on your overall score because it contributes to Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, and Answer Short Question. Focus heavily on oral fluency and pronunciation. Repeat Sentence is the single most important question type for your overall score because it contributes to both Speaking and Listening.
Writing: The essay and summarize written text tasks are scored on content, form, grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. Many candidates lose points on the essay by writing too few words (minimum is 200) or failing to develop their argument. Practice structuring your essay clearly with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Reading: The reading fill-in-the-blanks tasks (both single and multiple) are crucial. Build your academic vocabulary and practice collocations (words that commonly appear together). Multiple choice questions have no negative marking, so never leave them blank.
Listening: Listening carries the highest weight in the overall score calculation. Write from dictation is extremely important because it contributes to both Listening and Writing scores. Practice spelling and typing speed. Highlight incorrect words is also high-value because it tests your ability to identify small differences between similar words.
Preparation Tip: PTE is scored by an AI algorithm, not a human. This means you can optimize your approach. For example, in Describe Image, the algorithm rewards fluency and pronunciation more than content complexity. Speaking steadily without long pauses often scores higher than trying to include sophisticated vocabulary while hesitating.
