How the TOEIC Score Is Calculated
The TOEIC Listening and Reading test has 200 questions: 100 in Listening and 100 in Reading. Your raw score (number correct) is converted to a scaled score using ETS equating, which accounts for slight difficulty differences between test forms.
The formula (simplified):
Scaled Score (per section) = f(raw correct answers) using ETS equating table
Total Score = Listening Scaled + Reading Scaled (range: 10 to 990)
Each section scales from 5 to 495. No penalty for wrong answers.

TOEIC Score Benchmarks by Employer and Country
Japan
Japan is the largest TOEIC market globally. A score of 600 is a common baseline for roles involving any English contact. Scores of 730 to 800 are often required for positions with regular international communication. Some trading companies and global firms require 800 to 900 for management-track roles.
South Korea
Korean companies use TOEIC extensively in graduate recruitment. A score of 700 to 800 is standard for large conglomerates. Government agencies use TOEIC for civil service entry. 850 to 900 is competitive for roles with frequent English use.
Europe and the Americas
In France, Germany, and Brazil, TOEIC is used in corporate settings and some higher education contexts. In the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia, TOEIC is less common than IELTS or TOEFL for formal purposes.
TOEIC is not a university admission test for English-speaking countries
If you are applying to universities in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or Ireland, IELTS or TOEFL is what you need. TOEIC is for workplace English assessment. Check your university admissions page before booking any exam.
TOEIC vs TOEFL vs IELTS: Key Differences
| Test | Primary Use | Scale | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| TOEIC L&R | Workplace assessment | 10 to 990 | 2 hours |
| TOEFL iBT | University admission | 0 to 120 | 2 hours |
| IELTS Academic | University admission | 1.0 to 9.0 | 2 hr 45 min |
| PTE Academic | University admission | 10 to 90 | 2 hours |
Choose the right exam first:
If your goal is a job offer requiring English certification, TOEIC is the right test. If your goal is university admission in an English-speaking country, take IELTS or TOEFL instead. The wrong exam wastes money and time.
How to Improve Your TOEIC Score
Listening (Parts 1 to 4)
Parts 3 and 4 (conversations and talks) are where most scores drop because they require sustained attention across longer audio clips. Practicing with business English podcasts and news programs at normal speech speed is more effective than slow, simplified listening practice. Reading each question set before the audio begins is critical time management.
Reading (Parts 5 to 7)
Part 5 (incomplete sentences) rewards grammar and vocabulary and responds fastest to targeted practice. Parts 6 and 7 require both comprehension and speed. Most test-takers who score below 350 in Reading simply run out of time. Timed practice with official TOEIC materials is essential.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a penalty for wrong answers on the TOEIC?
No. The TOEIC does not subtract points for incorrect answers. Always answer every question, even if guessing. Leaving a question blank is never better than guessing.
How long is a TOEIC score valid?
TOEIC scores are valid for two years from the test date. After two years, ETS will not send official score reports to third parties. Check your specific employer’s policy, as some have shorter internal requirements.
Can I use a TOEIC score for a visa application?
TOEIC is generally not accepted for visa applications in the UK, Australia, or Canada, which require approved Secure English Language Tests. IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE Academic are accepted for most visa routes. Verify with the relevant immigration authority before testing.
What is the TOEIC Speaking and Writing test?
ETS offers a TOEIC Speaking and Writing test separately, scored 0 to 200 per section. It is used when employers need to assess active production skills, not just listening and reading. The two tests are independent; you can take either or both depending on what your employer requires.
How often can I retake the TOEIC?
ETS allows retakes with no mandatory waiting period between attempts. Most test centers recommend allowing 4 to 6 weeks of focused preparation between attempts to see meaningful score improvement.
