Common Mistakes When Checking CAEL Scores
Averaging your four scores instead of using the official overall. CAEL provides an official overall score on your score report. It may differ from a simple average of your four components. If you have your score report, enter the official overall for accuracy.
Treating IELTS and TOEFL conversions as exact. CAEL does not have an official concordance table with IELTS or TOEFL. The conversions shown here are approximate, based on CLB intermediate mapping. Your actual IELTS or TOEFL score could be different.
Not checking per-component CLB for immigration. For Express Entry, IRCC evaluates each component score separately against CLB minimums. An overall CAEL of 60 with one component at 45 does not meet CLB 7 in all skills.
Assuming CAEL is accepted everywhere in Canada. While most Canadian universities accept CAEL, a small number may not. Always check with your specific university program before relying on CAEL for admission.
Frequently Asked Questions
This converter takes your four CAEL component scores and produces an overall score (or uses your official overall if provided). It then maps each score to its Canadian CLB level and provides approximate IELTS and TOEFL equivalents.
If you do not enter an official overall score, the converter estimates it using a simple average:
Estimated Overall = (Reading + Listening + Writing + Speaking) / 4
The CLB mapping uses the official IRCC conversion table for CAEL:
CLB = Lookup(CAEL Score) from IRCC approved table
Where CAEL 80-90 maps to CLB 10, CAEL 70-79 to CLB 9, CAEL 60-69 to CLB 8, CAEL 50-59 to CLB 7, CAEL 40-49 to CLB 6, CAEL 30-39 to CLB 5, and CAEL 20-29 to CLB 4.
The IELTS and TOEFL equivalents are NOT based on an official concordance table. No such table exists between CAEL and IELTS or TOEFL. The conversions use CLB as an intermediate step, which means they are approximate. Your actual score on a different test could be higher or lower depending on your familiarity with that test format.
Important: The IELTS and TOEFL conversions shown are approximate. They are useful for planning and comparison, but should not be treated as guaranteed equivalents. If you need a specific IELTS or TOEFL score for an application, take that test directly.
CAEL scores range from 10 to 90. Each level corresponds to a specific CLB level, which is the standard used by the Canadian government for immigration:
80-90 (CLB 10): Expert-level English proficiency. You communicate with precision and nuance in academic and professional settings. Very few test takers reach this level. It exceeds all university and immigration requirements.
70-79 (CLB 9): Advanced proficiency. You handle complex academic language with confidence. This level gives maximum CRS points for Express Entry and satisfies the most selective university programs.
60-69 (CLB 8): Proficient English. You can manage demanding academic tasks effectively. This is the standard requirement for most Canadian graduate programs and competitive undergraduate admissions.
50-59 (CLB 7): Competent English. You handle most academic situations adequately with occasional errors. This meets the minimum for Express Entry FSW and most Canadian undergraduate programs.
40-49 (CLB 6): Developing proficiency. You can cope with straightforward academic tasks but struggle with complexity. This meets Express Entry CEC minimums but falls below most university admission thresholds.
10-39 (CLB 5 and below): Limited proficiency. Significant improvement is needed before you can meet academic or immigration requirements.
CAEL for Canadian University AdmissionsCAEL is accepted by the majority of Canadian universities. The most common requirement is CAEL 60 overall with no component below 50 or 60. However, specific requirements vary:
Top-tier universities (UofT, UBC, McGill): Typically require CAEL 60 overall with no band below 60. Some competitive programs like engineering or business may require CAEL 70.
Mid-tier universities (Waterloo, Alberta, Dalhousie): Commonly require CAEL 50-60 overall. Graduate programs may set higher requirements than undergraduate programs at the same institution.
Regional universities and colleges: May accept CAEL 50 overall. Some college diploma programs accept CAEL 40-50 depending on the field of study.
Always check the specific requirement listed by your target program. University admission requirements can differ from general university minimums, and graduate programs often have higher thresholds than undergraduate ones.
CAEL for Canadian ImmigrationCAEL was added to the IRCC list of approved English language tests for Express Entry in 2023. This was a significant development for test takers who prefer CAEL over IELTS or PTE.
Express Entry – Federal Skilled Worker (FSW): You need CLB 7 in each skill. This means CAEL 50 in Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. Each component is checked individually. An overall CAEL of 50 with one component at 45 does not meet the requirement.
Express Entry – Canadian Experience Class (CEC): You need CLB 5 in each skill. This means CAEL 30 in each component. This is a lower threshold designed for applicants who already have Canadian work experience.
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP): Many provincial programs follow federal CLB requirements. Some may set higher minimums. Check with the specific PNP you are targeting.
Tip: For Express Entry, scoring above the minimum CLB level earns you more Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points. CLB 9 in each skill (CAEL 70) gives significantly more points than CLB 7 (CAEL 50). If you are close to a higher CLB threshold, retaking the test to cross it can be worth many CRS points.
CAEL is a Canadian-designed test and its acceptance outside Canada is very limited. Here is the realistic picture:
United States: Very few US universities accept CAEL. If you are applying to US institutions, TOEFL is the standard. IELTS is also widely accepted. CAEL should not be your first choice for US applications.
United Kingdom: CAEL is not accepted for UK visas. A small number of UK universities may consider it, but this is rare. IELTS UKVI or PTE Academic are the standard choices.
Australia: CAEL is not accepted for Australian student visas or skilled migration. It is not recognized by the Australian government for immigration purposes.
New Zealand: CAEL is not accepted for New Zealand immigration. IELTS and PTE Academic are the standard tests.
Ireland: CAEL is not widely recognized in Ireland. IELTS is the standard for university admissions and employment permits.
Critical: If you are considering studying outside Canada, do not rely on CAEL being accepted. Always confirm directly with each institution. For any application outside Canada, IELTS or TOEFL are significantly safer choices.

What if my official overall is different from the average? This is normal. CAEL calculates the official overall using a proprietary method that may weight components differently. If you have your score report, enter the official overall for the most accurate result. The converter will note that it is using the official value.
Can one strong component compensate for a weak one? For immigration, no. IRCC checks each component independently against CLB minimums. For university admissions, most institutions also set per-component minimums. A high Reading score does not offset a low Writing score.
What if I scored exactly on a CLB boundary? CAEL scores of 50, 60, 70, and 80 fall at CLB boundaries. A score of exactly 50 maps to CLB 7 (the threshold for that level). A score of 49 maps to CLB 6. The difference between 49 and 50 can determine whether you meet an Express Entry requirement.
How does CAEL compare to IELTS in difficulty? This depends on your strengths. CAEL uses academic content similar to what you encounter in Canadian university courses. IELTS uses a mix of academic and general contexts. Some test takers find CAEL easier because of its familiar Canadian academic format, while others find IELTS easier because of its more predictable question types.
Can I retake just one CAEL component? No. Unlike PTE Academic, CAEL requires you to retake the full test. You cannot retake individual sections. If one component is below your target, you must sit the entire test again.
Does CAEL have a computer-delivered version? Yes. CAEL is available in both computer-delivered (CAEL CE) and paper-based formats. The scoring scale is the same for both. The computer-delivered version offers more test dates and faster results.
CAEL vs. IELTS vs. PTE for Canadian ApplicationsAll three tests are accepted for Canadian university admissions and Express Entry. The right choice depends on your situation:
Choose CAEL if: You are applying primarily to Canadian institutions, you are comfortable with Canadian academic English, and you prefer a test with content that directly mirrors university coursework.
Choose IELTS if: You might apply to institutions outside Canada, you want the most widely recognized test globally, or you need a test accepted for UK or Australian visas.
Choose PTE Academic if: You want the option to retake individual sections, you prefer computer-based testing, or you feel the AI-scored format suits your testing style better.
Tip: Take a free practice test for each option before deciding. Paragon Testing (CAEL), British Council (IELTS), and Pearson (PTE) all offer free practice materials. Your practice test performance across the three formats may reveal which one suits you best.
