Common Mistakes When Checking BULATS Scores
Confusing BULATS with Linguaskill General. Linguaskill Business is the successor to BULATS. It uses the same Cambridge English Scale. Linguaskill General is a different test aimed at academic contexts, not business. Make sure you are checking the right variant.
Treating IELTS and TOEFL conversions as exact. No official concordance table exists between BULATS and IELTS or TOEFL. The conversions shown here use CEFR as an intermediate step and are approximate. Your actual score on a different test could be different.
Not checking per-module requirements. Many business schools and employers require minimum scores in each module, not just the overall. A high Reading and Listening score with a low Speaking score may not meet the requirement.
Assuming BULATS is accepted for all visa types. BULATS was accepted for some UK work visas but not for student visas in most countries. For immigration purposes, IELTS, PTE Academic, or TOEFL are far more widely accepted.
Frequently Asked Questions
This converter maps your three BULATS module scores to CEFR levels, approximate IELTS bands, and approximate TOEFL scores. It then checks your results against common business school and work visa requirements.
BULATS reports scores on the Cambridge English Scale, which ranges from 82 to 180. Each score maps to a CEFR level:
CEFR Level = Lookup(Score) from Cambridge English Scale table
Where 180 = C2, 160-179 = C1, 140-159 = B2, 120-139 = B1, 100-119 = A2, and 82-99 = A1.
IELTS and TOEFL conversions use CEFR as an intermediate step. There is no official concordance table between BULATS and IELTS or TOEFL:
IELTS Approx. = CEFR_to_IELTS(Lookup(Score))
TOEFL Approx. = CEFR_to_TOEFL(Lookup(Score))
Important: The IELTS and TOEFL conversions are approximate. They are based on CEFR intermediate mapping, not on direct concordance research between BULATS and those tests. Your actual IELTS or TOEFL score could differ depending on your familiarity with those specific test formats.
BULATS uses three test modules, each scored on the Cambridge English Scale:
Reading and Listening (combined): This is a single computer-adaptive test that presents questions of varying difficulty based on your responses. It tests your ability to understand business emails, reports, articles, and presentations.
Writing: This separate module asks you to write business emails and short reports based on workplace scenarios. It is assessed on how well you structure your writing, use appropriate business vocabulary, and handle the task requirements.
Speaking: This module involves a face-to-face or video call assessment where you respond to workplace scenarios, give short presentations, and participate in conversations. It is assessed on fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.
BULATS for UK Business Programs and VisasThe UK was one of the largest markets for BULATS, particularly for business English certification:
UK MBA programs: Many UK business schools accepted BULATS at CEFR B2 (score 140) or C1 (score 160) for MBA admissions. London Business School, Cass Business School, and others commonly listed BULATS as an accepted test alongside IELTS.
UK Tier 2 work visas: BULATS at CEFR B1 (score 120) was accepted for UK Tier 2 General work visas. This required a minimum of 120 in all three modules. Check the current UK government website, as the approved test list changes.
Professional registration: Some UK professional bodies accepted BULATS for English language requirements in accounting, engineering, and other regulated fields.
Note: The UK Skilled Worker visa (which replaced Tier 2) may have a different approved test list. Always verify with the UK Home Office before relying on BULATS for any visa application.
BULATS had limited but real acceptance in Canada:
University admissions: Some Canadian universities, particularly for MBA and business programs, accepted BULATS scores. The typical requirement was CEFR B2 (score 140) for graduate programs.
Professional bodies: Certain Canadian professional associations accepted BULATS as evidence of English proficiency for membership or licensure.
Important: BULATS is NOT currently on the IRCC approved test list for Canadian Express Entry or study permits. If you need an English test for Canadian immigration, use IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL, or CAEL. BULATS may still be accepted by individual Canadian universities for admission purposes.
Australia: BULATS was not accepted for Australian skilled migration visas or student visas. Some Australian business colleges may have accepted it for non-award programs, but this was not widespread.
United States: BULATS had very limited recognition in the US. A small number of executive education programs may have accepted it, but it was never a mainstream option for US university admissions.
New Zealand: BULATS was not accepted for New Zealand immigration. Some business schools may have considered it for direct admission.
Ireland: BULATS was not widely recognized in Ireland for university admissions or employment permits. IELTS is the standard.
Europe: BULATS had the strongest recognition in continental Europe for corporate English assessment. Many European multinational companies used it for internal employee language benchmarking.
Tip: If you are considering BULATS for any purpose outside corporate English assessment, verify acceptance directly with the receiving institution before booking the test. For immigration and university admissions, IELTS or PTE Academic are significantly safer choices with broader recognition.

Why is Reading and Listening a combined score? BULATS uses a computer-adaptive format where Reading and Listening questions are interspersed in a single test session. The algorithm adjusts question difficulty based on your answers, and a single combined score is produced. You cannot get separate Reading and Listening scores.
Can I use BULATS for university admission outside business programs? Some universities accept BULATS or Linguaskill Business for general admission, but this is less common. For non-business programs, IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT are much more widely accepted. Check with each specific university before relying on BULATS for a non-business application.
What if my module scores are very uneven? This is common. Many test takers score higher on Reading and Listening than on Speaking or Writing. Most institutions set minimums for each module, so a weak Speaking score can prevent you from meeting the requirement even with strong Reading and Listening. If retaking, focus on your weakest module.
How does BULATS compare to Cambridge FCE, CAE, and CPE? All of these tests report on the Cambridge English Scale, so the scores are directly comparable. BULATS 160 is the same level as CAE grade B or C (C1). BULATS 140 is the same level as FCE grade A or B (B2). The difference is that BULATS uses business content, while FCE, CAE, and CPE use general academic content.
Can I retake individual BULATS modules? Yes. You can retake individual modules (Reading and Listening, Writing, or Speaking) without retaking the others. This is an advantage over tests like IELTS where you must retake all four sections together.
How long are BULATS results valid? BULATS results are typically valid for two years from the test date. This aligns with the standard validity period for most English language tests. Some institutions may have shorter acceptance windows.
Tip: If you are deciding between BULATS/Linguaskill Business and IELTS, consider your primary purpose. For corporate English assessment or UK MBA applications, BULATS is well-suited. For immigration or general university admissions, IELTS provides much broader recognition and less risk of non-acceptance.
