Iceland Required Grade Calculator
What grade do you need on your final or remaining assessment? Find out instantly.
How This Calculator Works
This tool answers one question: given what you have already earned and how much of the course is left, what do you need to score on the remaining work to hit your target?
The formula is straightforward. Your target final grade equals the weighted combination of what you have already earned and what you will earn on the remaining assessment.
Example:
Current grade: 7.0 / 10
Work completed: 60% of course
Target grade: 8.0 / 10
Remaining weight: 40%
Required = (8.0 × 10 − 7.0 × 60) / 40
= (80 − 42) / 40
= 38 / 40
= 9.50 / 10
That student needs a 9.5 on the final to reach an 8.0 overall. It is possible, but not easy. If they lower their target to 7.5, the required grade drops to 8.25, which is much more realistic.
Understanding the Icelandic Pass Threshold
The minimum passing grade at most Icelandic universities is 5.0 on the 0–10 scale. Some programs, particularly in health sciences, engineering, and law, set the minimum higher for specific core modules. Always check your course syllabus rather than assuming 5.0 applies universally.
If you are currently below 5.0 on completed work and the remaining assessment carries less than 50% weight, it may already be mathematically difficult or impossible to pass. This calculator will tell you clearly if that is the case.
Table of Truth: Sample Scenarios
These examples let you check whether your own numbers make sense.
| Current Grade | Work Done | Target | Required | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | 60% | 5.0 | 3.50 | Very achievable |
| 4.0 | 60% | 5.0 | 6.50 | Achievable with effort |
| 7.0 | 60% | 8.0 | 9.50 | Challenging but possible |
| 7.5 | 70% | 8.5 | 10.33 | Impossible (above 10) |
| 3.0 | 70% | 5.0 | 9.33 | Very hard, borderline |
| 8.5 | 50% | 5.0 | 1.50 | Already secured |
Edge Cases and Real Questions
What if I have multiple remaining assessments, not just one?
Treat them as a single block. Add up the total percentage weight of all remaining work and enter that as your remaining weight. The required grade then represents what you need to average across all remaining assessments combined. If the assessments are very different in nature, for example a group project and an individual exam, you will need to think about how to distribute your effort to hit that combined average.
My course only has a final exam. No prior grades. What do I enter?
If 100% of your grade comes from a single exam, this calculator does not apply directly. Your required grade is simply your target grade. You need a 5.0 to pass, a 7.5 to be very good, and so on. There is no prior work to factor in.
I missed an assessment and got a zero. Can I still pass?
Enter 0 as your current grade and the weight of the missed assessment as the work completed. The calculator will show what you need on the remaining work to reach your target. If a zero was due to absence without valid excuse, some Icelandic institutions may not allow you to drop or replace it. Check your faculty’s rules.
What if the calculator shows I need below zero?
That means you have already exceeded your target. Even if you score 0 on everything remaining, you will still meet your goal. This typically happens when your current grade is well above your target and the remaining work carries little weight.
My target is to improve my meðaleinkunn for a scholarship. What should I enter?
This calculator works at the individual course level. To figure out what you need in this course to move your overall meðaleinkunn to a target, you would first use the meðaleinkunn calculator to simulate different course outcomes. Then come back here to find out what final grade is needed within that course to achieve the course grade you are aiming for.
Does this work for high school (menntaskóli) too?
Yes. Icelandic upper secondary schools use the same 0–10 scale and assessment weighting system. The formula is identical. Enter your current grade on completed coursework, the percentage weight of that work, and your target final grade. The calculator handles the rest.
What Each Result Level Actually Means
| Required Grade | What That Means | Difficulty Level |
|---|---|---|
| Below 0 | Already achieved your target | Done |
| 0.0–4.9 | Very low bar; even a minimal effort passes | Easy |
| 5.0–6.4 | Solid performance needed; achievable with preparation | Moderate |
| 6.5–7.9 | Good to very good performance required | Challenging |
| 8.0–9.4 | High performance needed; will require focused study | Hard |
| 9.5–10.0 | Near-perfect score needed; possible but tight | Very Hard |
| Above 10.0 | Mathematically impossible | Talk to your instructor |
Common Mistakes Students Make
- Entering the exam weight instead of the weight of work already done
- Confusing coursework percentage with exam percentage
- Entering a target of 10 when 7.5 would already be outstanding performance
- Not checking whether the minimum pass in their specific course is 5.0 or higher
- Assuming a missed assignment is fixable without checking the faculty’s rules first
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum grade to pass in Iceland?
At most Icelandic universities including Háskóli Íslands and Háskólinn í Reykjavík, the standard minimum pass is 5.0 out of 10. Some programs set a higher minimum for core courses. Check your specific course’s námskrá to confirm.
Can I resit a failed exam in Iceland?
Yes, in most cases. Icelandic students typically have the right to one resit attempt, often at the end of the same or the following semester. If you fail the resit, you usually need to repeat the full course. Resit policies vary by institution, so confirm with your faculty office.
I need a 10 on my final to pass. Is there any way?
A 10 is technically possible but represents perfect or near-perfect performance. If the calculator shows you need exactly 10.0, it is extremely unlikely but not zero-probability. If it shows above 10.0, it is mathematically impossible and you should speak with your academic advisor right away. Options may include medical or compassionate withdrawal, special assessment arrangements, or alternative completion pathways.
How do I find out what percentage my final exam is worth?
Check your course’s námskrá (syllabus). In Iceland, university course pages typically list assessment components and their percentage weights. If it is not clear, contact your course instructor directly. They are required to provide this information.
Always verify course rules with your faculty or instructor.
