How the Australian 7-Point GPA Scale Works
Australian universities use a 7-point grading scale, not the 4-point scale used in the United States. Each letter grade maps to a grade point value, and your GPA is the weighted average of those points across all your subjects.
The weighting is done by credit points (sometimes called credit hours or units). A subject worth 6 credit points counts twice as much as one worth 3 credit points. This matters. A High Distinction in a minor 3-credit subject does not move your GPA as much as a Credit in a major 6-credit core unit.
The Formula
Example:
Subject A: HD (7) x 6 credits = 42
Subject B: CR (5) x 6 credits = 30
Subject C: P (4) x 3 credits = 12
Total weighted points = 42 + 30 + 12 = 84
Total credits = 6 + 6 + 3 = 15
GPA = 84 / 15 = 5.60
Australian Grade Points Reference Table
| Grade | Full Name | Typical Mark Range | Grade Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| HD | High Distinction | 85% to 100% | 7 |
| D | Distinction | 75% to 84% | 6 |
| CR | Credit | 65% to 74% | 5 |
| P | Pass | 50% to 64% | 4 |
| CP | Conceded Pass | 45% to 49% | 3 |
| F | Fail | Below 50% | 0 |
| WF | Withdrawn Fail | Withdrawn late | 0 |
What Is a Good GPA in Australia?
Here is a realistic breakdown of how GPA ranges are perceived in Australian academic and professional contexts:
| GPA Range | Grade Average | What It Signals |
|---|---|---|
| 6.50 to 7.00 | HD average | Honours Class I; competitive for top postgrad programs |
| 5.50 to 6.49 | D average | Honours Class II; strong for most graduate applications |
| 4.50 to 5.49 | CR average | Solid academic standing; meets most scholarship minimums |
| 4.00 to 4.49 | P average | Passes all subjects; some grad programs require higher |
| Below 4.00 | Below P | Academic standing at risk; may need intervention |
GPA for Scholarships
Most university scholarships in Australia specify a minimum GPA. Commonwealth-supported merit scholarships typically require 5.5 to 6.0. Research training scholarships (for Honours or postgrad) often require 6.0 or above. Some industry scholarships use a percentage average instead of GPA, so check which system the awarding body uses.
GPA for Graduate Admission
Graduate programs (Masters by coursework, MBA, Graduate Diplomas) generally require a minimum GPA of 4.5 to 5.0. Competitive programs at Go8 universities often expect 5.5 to 6.0 from domestic applicants. For international applicants, the conversion to Australian GPA depends on the institution’s own equivalency tables.
GPA Example Calculations
| Subjects and Grades | Credits | Weighted Pts | GPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 x HD (7) | 4 x 6 = 24 | 168 | 7.00 |
| 2 x HD, 2 x D | 4 x 6 = 24 | 156 | 6.50 |
| 2 x D, 2 x CR | 4 x 6 = 24 | 132 | 5.50 |
| 3 x CR, 1 x P | 4 x 6 = 24 | 124 | 5.17 |
| 2 x P, 1 x F, 1 x CR | 4 x 6 = 24 | 108 | 4.50 |
| 1 x HD, 3 x F | 4 x 6 = 24 | 84 | 3.50 |
Common Mistakes Students Make
- Ignoring credit point weighting. A Pass in a 12-credit thesis unit will drag your GPA much more than a Fail in a 3-credit elective. Credit points are not all equal.
- Counting withdrawn subjects as passes. A Withdrawn Fail (WF) counts as 0, not as a neutral result. Always withdraw before the census date to avoid this.
- Confusing raw percentage with GPA. Getting 72% in a subject gives you a Credit (5 points), not 72 points. The grade conversion is the important step.
- Assuming all universities use the same scale. The University of Melbourne uses a different grading system. Check your specific institution.
- Waiting until graduation to calculate GPA. Track it each semester so you know where you stand and can plan which subjects to take more seriously.
