How Semester GPA Is Calculated in Australia

Your semester GPA is a weighted average of your subject grade points for the current term only. It resets each semester. It does not carry previous results forward. Think of it as a snapshot of how you performed in this specific period.

The formula uses the same weighted average logic as cumulative GPA, but limited to the subjects you took this semester:

Semester GPA = Sum of (Grade Points x Credit Points per subject)
divided by Total Credit Points this semester

Grade Points: HD=7, D=6, CR=5, P=4, F=0

Example:
Business Law: HD (7) x 6cp = 42
Marketing: CR (5) x 6cp = 30
Accounting: D (6) x 6cp = 36
Statistics: P (4) x 6cp = 24

Total weighted = 42+30+36+24 = 132
Total credits = 24
Semester GPA = 132 / 24 = 5.50

Semester GPA vs Cumulative GPA: What Is the Difference?

Students mix these up constantly. Here is the clear distinction:

When semester GPA matters most: Academic progress warnings are often triggered by a low semester GPA, even if your cumulative is fine. Some semester-based scholarships and prizes also use semester GPA specifically. And knowing your semester GPA helps you project how your cumulative GPA will change.

Tip: A single Fail in a semester with 4 subjects (24 total credits) pulls your semester GPA down by 1.75 points compared to getting a Pass in that subject. Withdrawing before census date removes the credit weight entirely. If you are struggling, check your university’s census date before it is too late.

What Is a Good Semester GPA?

Context matters, but here is a practical breakdown of what semester GPA ranges typically mean for Australian students:

  • 6.5 to 7.0: Exceptional. You are in the top tier for the semester. Competitive for merit scholarships and academic prizes.
  • 5.5 to 6.49: Strong. Distinction average. Most Honours and graduate programs would be satisfied with this consistently.
  • 5.0 to 5.49: Solid. Credit-plus average. Meets most progression and scholarship minimums.
  • 4.0 to 4.99: Passing. You are progressing but may need to improve to qualify for competitive opportunities.
  • Below 4.0: At risk. Some universities trigger academic support requirements or progression checks at this level.

How Semester GPA Affects Your Cumulative GPA

If your cumulative GPA is 5.20 over 72 credits, and your semester GPA comes in at 6.00 over 24 credits, your new cumulative becomes:

New cumulative GPA = (5.20 x 72 + 6.00 x 24) / (72 + 24)
= (374.4 + 144) / 96
= 518.4 / 96
= 5.40

That is a 0.20 GPA point improvement from one strong semester. Use the SabiCalculator Cumulative GPA Calculator to project the full effect across your degree.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does semester GPA appear on my transcript? +
Yes. Most Australian university transcripts show both your semester GPA and your cumulative GPA for each study period. Some show WAM (Weighted Average Mark) instead of or alongside GPA. Check your student portal to see how your institution reports results.
Can a great semester GPA save a low cumulative GPA? +
It helps, but the leverage decreases over time. By the time you have 96 credits completed, a single semester of 24 credits represents only 20% of your total weight. A perfect 7.00 semester GPA on top of a 4.50 cumulative would only raise your cumulative to 4.80. The earlier you start performing well, the more impact each semester has.
Do summer or winter semester grades count? +
Yes. Any officially enrolled semester or study period counts toward your GPA, including summer sessions, winter intensives, and trimester blocks. These are not treated differently from standard semesters. Enter them in this calculator the same way as a regular semester.
What if I only have one subject this semester? +
Your semester GPA with one subject is simply the grade point value of that subject. HD gives you a 7.00, D gives 6.00, and so on. Credit point weighting only matters when you have more than one subject. Enter just one subject here and the calculator will confirm the result.
Does my semester GPA include pass/fail (S) grades? +
No. Satisfactory (S) and Unsatisfactory (U) grades are excluded from GPA calculations entirely. They do not contribute grade points or credit weight. Do not include pass/fail subjects when calculating your semester GPA using this tool.

SabiCalculator Semester GPA Calculator uses the standard Australian 7-point HD to F grading scale. Results are based on credit-point weighted averages. Always verify with your university’s official academic records.
