Enter this semester’s courses, grades and units, add the CGPA and total units from your last result, and see your semester GPA, your new CGPA and the class of degree it falls in. It uses the NUC 5-point scale that most Nigerian universities follow.

The scale this page uses
Most Nigerian federal and state universities use the NUC 5-point scale. An A is 5, a B is 4, a C is 3, a D is 2, an E is 1 and an F is 0. The classes of degree come from the CGPA, not from single marks.
| Grade | Mark (%) | Grade points |
|---|---|---|
| A | 70 to 100 | 5 |
| B | 60 to 69 | 4 |
| C | 50 to 59 | 3 |
| D | 45 to 49 | 2 |
| E | 40 to 44 | 1 |
| F | Below 40 | 0 |
| Class | CGPA |
|---|---|
| First Class | 4.50 to 5.00 |
| Second Class Upper | 3.50 to 4.49 |
| Second Class Lower | 2.40 to 3.49 |
| Third Class | 1.50 to 2.39 |
| Pass | 1.00 to 1.49 |
A worked example
Say your last result showed a CGPA of 3.85 over 62 total units. This semester you take six courses. Each grade becomes points, the points are multiplied by the course units, and the new credit points join the ones you already have.
| Course | Grade | Points | Units | Quality points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MTH 201 | A | 5 | 3 | 15 |
| PHY 205 | B | 4 | 3 | 12 |
| CSC 201 | A | 5 | 3 | 15 |
| GST 211 | C | 3 | 2 | 6 |
| ENG 203 | B | 4 | 3 | 12 |
| STA 201 | D | 2 | 2 | 4 |
| This semester | 16 | 64 |
The semester GPA is 64 ÷ 16 = 4.00.
Before this semester you had 3.85 over 62 units, which is 238.7 credit points. The new total is (238.7 + 64) ÷ (62 + 16) = 3.88.
A CGPA of 3.88 is Second Class Upper. The next class up, First Class, starts at 4.50, so the gap is 0.62.
The E grade and the pass mark
The NUC scale treats 40 to 44 as an E worth 1 point, and anything under 40 as an F. Some universities have moved to a pass mark of 45, which removes the E, and some programmes ask for a higher pass mark still. Use the grading scale box above to pick the one in your student handbook. If your school uses something else, ask your department which table applies to you.
Carryovers and your CGPA
A failed course (an F) counts as 0 points, but its units still count in the total. That is why one carryover can pull a CGPA down by more than you expect. Many schools keep the failed attempt in the CGPA after you pass the retake, and some replace it, so the rule matters. The carryover calculator shows both.
Applying abroad with a Nigerian CGPA
There is no official way to turn a 5-point CGPA into a US or UK GPA. Admissions offices and credential evaluators use their own tables, so a number from a converter is a guide only. The CGPA to GPA converter shows how estimates differ, and the school you apply to will say which evaluation service it accepts.
How CGPA is calculated
- Look up the grade points for each grade. On the NUC scale an A is 5, a B is 4, a C is 3, a D is 2, an E is 1 and an F is 0.
- Multiply each course’s grade points by its units. This gives the credit points for the course.
- Add up the credit points and the units for the semester. Divide the first by the second to get the semester GPA.
- Add your credit points from earlier semesters (CGPA × TNU) to this semester’s, and divide by the new total units. That is your CGPA.
CGPA = total credit points (TCP) ÷ total units (TNU)
Why your number might not match your result slip
- Your CGPA so far is usually rounded to two decimals on your result slip, so the last digit of your new CGPA can be a little off. If you can see your total credit points (TCP), use them.
- The class bands are applied to the CGPA rounded to two decimals, so 4.495 reads as 4.50. Some schools truncate instead, so check how yours rounds near a boundary.
- Courses marked withdrawn or incomplete are left out. Failed courses are not left out. They count as 0.
- Your school may count carryovers, repeats and electives under its own rules. Your official result is the number that counts.
- Final-year weighting or a special rule for degree classification is not included.
Mistakes that throw a CGPA off
Averaging your semester GPAs
If your semesters had different unit loads, the average of the GPAs is wrong. The CGPA is total credit points divided by total units.
Leaving out the failed courses
An F is 0 points, and its units still count. Leaving it out gives a CGPA that is too high.
Using the wrong scale
A polytechnic uses a 4-point scale, and some private universities use other scales. Check your handbook, and use the polytechnic CGPA calculator for ND and HND.
Counting units you did not take
Use the units you registered for and sat, not the units in the full programme.
Questions students ask
How do I calculate my CGPA in Nigeria?
Multiply each course’s grade point by its units, add those up to get the credit points, and divide by the total units. For your CGPA across semesters, add all credit points and all units from the start. The calculator does it and shows the working.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA is for one semester. CGPA covers every semester so far, weighted by units.
What CGPA is a First Class in Nigeria?
On the NUC 5-point scale, First Class is 4.50 to 5.00. Second Class Upper is 3.50 to 4.49, Second Class Lower is 2.40 to 3.49, Third Class is 1.50 to 2.39, and a Pass is 1.00 to 1.49.
Does a carryover change my CGPA?
Yes. A failed course counts as 0 points but its units still count. Whether the retake replaces the failed attempt or both stay in depends on your school. The carryover calculator shows both.
Is 40 or 45 the pass mark?
The NUC scale treats 40 to 44 as an E, which is a pass. Some universities start passing at 45. Pick the option that matches your handbook.
Can I still make a First Class or a Second Class Upper?
The class of degree target calculator shows the average grade you need over your remaining units for each class, and tells you when a class is out of reach.
