Type a letter grade, like B+, and see its GPA points on three common US scales. Below the calculator is the full chart, so you can scan every grade at once. Check which scale your school uses, because A+ is 4.0 at some schools and 4.3 at others.

Your answer
Your answer shows up here once you enter a letter grade.
What to enter
- Letter grade
- A letter from A+ down to F. Type the plus or minus with it, like B+ or C-.
Worked examples
A B+
A student gets a B+ in a course.
- Match the letter to the row for B+ in the table.
- Read across to the scale your school uses.
- Multiply each course’s points by its credits and divide by the total credits to get a GPA.
A B+ is 3.3 on the plus/minus scales. On the plain whole-letter scale there is no B+, so it reads Not on this scale.
An A+
A student gets an A+.
- Match the letter to the row for A+ in the table.
- Read across to the scale your school uses.
- Multiply each course’s points by its credits and divide by the total credits to get a GPA.
The scales disagree on this grade, so use the one your school or the school you are applying to uses. Stanford lists A+ as 4.3, and UNC counts it as 4.0.
A C-
A student gets a C-.
- Match the letter to the row for C- in the table.
- Read across to the scale your school uses.
- Multiply each course’s points by its credits and divide by the total credits to get a GPA.
A C- is 1.7 on the plus/minus scales, and it is not on the plain scale.

| D- | 0.7 | 0.7 | – |
| F | 0.0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |
The three scales
The plus/minus scale gives A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7 and so on, with A+ at 4.0. The second scale is the same except that A+ is 4.3, as Stanford lists it. The plain scale has no pluses or minuses: A is 4, B is 3, C is 2, D is 1 and F is 0. UNC and Stanford both publish the plus/minus values, and the plain scale is the simplest version many schools and high schools use.
4.0 versus 4.33
Some schools put A+ at 4.33 and step down in thirds, so A- is 3.67 and B+ is 3.33. This chart rounds to one decimal, as the published tables here do. If your school uses thirds, check its grading policy.
Percentages and letters
A letter grade comes from a percentage band, and the bands differ by school. The percentage to GPA converter shows how three published tables turn the same percentage into different GPAs.
How it is calculated
- Find the letter in the chart and read the points on your school’s scale.
- Multiply the points by the course credits.
- Add those up for all your courses and divide by the total credits.
GPA = sum of (grade points × credits) ÷ sum of credits
Assumptions to keep in mind
- The values come from the published tables of two US universities, and the plain scale is the simple version. Your school may differ.
- A+ is counted as 4.0 on the first scale, as UNC does, and 4.3 on the second, as Stanford does.
- Grades are rounded to one decimal. Some schools use thirds, like 3.67.
- Pass, fail and withdrawal grades are not on the chart because they do not count in a GPA.
Mistakes that give the wrong answer
Using a 4.3 chart at a 4.0 school
If your A+ is capped at 4.0, a chart that gives 4.3 will put your GPA too high.
Ignoring pluses and minuses
A B+ and a B- are 0.6 apart. Dropping the sign moves your GPA.
Averaging the letters instead of the credits
A GPA weights each grade by credits. A 4-credit B counts more than a 1-credit A.
Questions students ask
What GPA is an A?
An A is 4.0 on all the scales on this page. An A- is 3.7, and an A+ is 4.0 or 4.3 depending on the school.
What GPA is a B+?
A B+ is 3.3 on the plus/minus scales. The plain scale has no B+.
What GPA is a C?
A C is 2.0 on every scale here. A C+ is 2.3 and a C- is 1.7 on the plus/minus scales.
Is an A+ 4.0 or 4.3?
It depends on the school. UNC counts it as 4.0 and Stanford lists it as 4.3. Check your school’s grading policy.
What is a passing grade?
A D is usually a pass at the course level, but many programs need a C or better to count. Check your program’s rules.
How do I turn letters into a GPA?
Give each course its points, multiply by the credits, add them up, and divide by the total credits. The GPA calculator does it for you.
