Add your units, credit points and grades to get your GPA on the 7-point scale that many Australian universities use. Switch to a 4-point scale if yours uses one, and the table under your result shows what one different grade would do.

Your GPA
Your result shows up here once you add a unit with a grade and credit points.
Which scale does your university use?
These are the three scales on this page. N/A means the scale has no such grade.
| Grade | 7-point (ANU, UTS) | 4-point (Monash) | 4-point (older UTS) |
|---|---|---|---|
| HD | 7 | 4 | 4 |
| D | 6 | 3 | 3.5 |
| C | 5 | 2 | 2.5 |
| P | 4 | 1 | 1.5 |
| NP | n/a | 0.7 | n/a |
| F | 0 | 0.3 | 0.5 |
| WF | n/a | 0 | n/a |
A worked example
Here is a made-up student with six 6 credit point units: an HD, two D, two C and a P.
| Unit | Grade | Points | Credit points | Grade points × credit points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unit 1 | HD | 7 | 6 | 42 |
| Unit 2 | D | 6 | 6 | 36 |
| Unit 3 | D | 6 | 6 | 36 |
| Unit 4 | C | 5 | 6 | 30 |
| Unit 5 | C | 5 | 6 | 30 |
| Unit 6 | P | 4 | 6 | 24 |
| Total | 36 | 198 |
The working is 198 ÷ 36 = 5.500, so the GPA is 5.500. That sits halfway between a Credit and a Distinction average.
Now add one failed 6 credit point unit. It counts as 0, so the totals become 198 over 42 and the GPA falls to 4.714. One fail among seven units costs 0.786 points, which is why leaving a fail out would flatter your GPA.
How the GPA is calculated
- Look up the grade points for each grade. On the 7-point scale an HD is 7, a D is 6, a C is 5 and a P is 4.
- Multiply each unit’s grade points by its credit points.
- Add up those results, and add up the credit points.
- Divide the first total by the second. That is your GPA.
GPA = sum of (grade points × credit points) ÷ sum of credit points
Assumptions to keep in mind
- Failed units count as 0 on the 7-point scale, as they do at ANU and UTS. One fail can pull a GPA down a long way.
- Ungraded passes and withdrawn units without failure are left out, as at ANU and UTS. Use the options that say not counted.
- ANU calls a credit CR and a fail N. This page uses C and F.
- The 4-point scales are the ones Monash uses now and UTS used before January 2020. Your university may use a different one.
- Your transcript’s GPA is the official number. A repeated unit or a special policy can make it differ from this page.
Mistakes that throw an Australian GPA off
Using the wrong scale
Many Australian universities, including ANU and UTS, use 7 points, and Monash uses 4. A GPA of 5 means a Credit average on 7 points and is impossible on 4 points. Check your transcript for the top of your scale.
Forgetting that a fail counts as 0
On the 7-point scale a failed unit pulls the average down by its full weight. Leaving it out gives a GPA higher than your transcript.
Mixing up GPA and WAM
A GPA averages grade points. A WAM averages the numeric marks, so it is a number out of 100. They answer different questions, and universities ask for one or the other.
Counting every unit as the same size
A 12 point unit counts twice as much as a 6 point unit. Enter the credit points for each unit, or the weighting will be wrong.
Counting ungraded passes
A unit marked as an ungraded pass has no grade points. Entering it as a P adds weight at 4 that your university leaves out.
Questions students ask
Is an Australian GPA out of 7 or out of 4?
Many universities, including ANU and UTS, use a 7-point scale where HD is 7. Monash uses a 4-point scale where HD is 4.0, and UTS used a 4-point scale before January 2020. Your transcript says which yours is.
How do I calculate my Australian GPA?
Multiply each unit’s grade points by its credit points, add those up, and divide by the total credit points. On the 7-point scale an HD is 7, a D is 6, a C is 5 and a P is 4. Enter your units above and the page does it for you.
What’s the difference between GPA and WAM?
GPA averages grade points like 7 or 6. WAM averages your actual marks out of 100. Some universities and programs ask for one and some for the other. The WAM calculator does the WAM version.
Do failed units count?
At ANU and UTS they do, as 0 on the 7-point scale. Monash gives a fail 0.3 on its 4-point scale and a withdrawn fail 0. A GPA that leaves out a fail will be higher than the one on your transcript.
How do I convert my Australian GPA to a US GPA?
There’s no official formula. Some sites divide by 7 and multiply by 4, which is simple scaling. Monash says to ask the other institution how it converts. Use the percentage to GPA converter if you have percentage marks, and check what the school you are applying to asks for.
