3 Mistakes That Give You the Wrong WAM
How the WAM Calculator Works
Each subject contributes to your WAM in proportion to its credit point value. A 12-credit subject counts twice as much as a 6-credit one. The calculator does this weighting automatically as you type.
Biology 101: 72 x 6 cp = 432
Chemistry 201: 58 x 12 cp = 696
Statistics 101: 80 x 6 cp = 480
WAM = (432 + 696 + 480) / (6 + 12 + 6) = 1608 / 24 = 67.00
Notice how Chemistry pulls the average down despite the other two being stronger. That is the nature of weighting: heavier subjects have disproportionate influence on the result.
What Is a Good WAM in Australia?
| WAM Range | Grade | What It Means | Honours Class |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85 and above | High Distinction (HD) | Exceptional, top 5-10% | First Class |
| 75 to 84 | Distinction (D) | Above average, very competitive | Upper Second |
| 65 to 74 | Credit (CR) | Solid, meets most requirements | Lower Second |
| 50 to 64 | Pass (P) | Meets minimum standard | Third Class |
| Below 50 | Fail (F) | Did not meet requirements | Not eligible |
University-Specific WAM Rules
University of Sydney
USyd calculates WAM across all completed units. Failed subjects are included unless excluded via special consideration or academic appeal. The Honours cutoff at USyd is typically 75 for most faculties.
University of Melbourne
UMelb uses WAM for degree progressions and Graduate Research admissions. Graduate entry programs typically require WAM 65 to 70. Honours at Melbourne generally requires 70 or above.
UNSW Sydney
UNSW shows both WAM and GPA on the official academic transcript. WAM is used for Honours eligibility (cutoff 65 to 70), while GPA appears for exchange and international applications.
Monash University
Monash uses WAM for scholarship eligibility and Honours. Some faculties require minimum WAMs for course progression, particularly in Engineering and Business.
University of Queensland
UQ officially uses a 7-point GPA scale rather than WAM. This calculator can still estimate your weighted average, but check your student portal for the official GPA figure.
Australian National University
ANU uses a 7-point GPA scale. Rough conversion: 85+ WAM is approximately 7.0 GPA; 75 to 84 maps to about 6.0 to 6.9; 65 to 74 maps to about 5.0 to 5.9.
WAM vs GPA: What Is the Difference?
| University | System | Scale | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Sydney | WAM | 0 to 100 | WAM for honours and scholarships |
| University of Melbourne | WAM | 0 to 100 | WAM for graduate entry and honours |
| UNSW Sydney | Both | WAM 0-100, GPA 0-7 | Both shown on transcript |
| Monash University | WAM | 0 to 100 | WAM for scholarships and progression |
| University of Queensland | GPA | 0 to 7 | Some faculties track WAM internally |
| Australian National University | GPA | 0 to 7 | 7-point scale, no official WAM |
How to Improve Your WAM
Focus effort on high-credit subjects
A 10-point improvement in a 12-credit unit moves your WAM significantly more than the same gain in a 3-credit elective. Use the What-If feature here to simulate what you need before finals.
Track WAM every semester, not just at the end
Early semesters carry the same credit point weight as later ones. A poor first year stays in your cumulative WAM across the entire degree.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my WAM appear on my official transcript?
Yes, at most Australian universities your cumulative WAM appears on your academic transcript.
Can I calculate semester WAM and cumulative WAM here?
Yes. Enter subjects from one semester for a semester WAM, or enter your full degree for cumulative WAM. The formula is the same either way.
What is the minimum WAM to graduate?
Most Australian universities require a minimum WAM of 50 to graduate.
Does WAM matter after your first job?
Significantly less so. Most employers weight academic results heavily for graduate roles but rarely mention WAM once you have two or more years of work experience.
