Common Mistakes to Avoid
- • Forgetting to include all courses (electives, PE, etc.)
- • Using the wrong credit hours (check your Auburn Student Center)
- • Including W (Withdrawn) or I (Incomplete) grades in calculations
- • Not accounting for repeated courses (Auburn uses grade forgiveness)
How the Auburn GPA Calculator Works
Auburn University uses a standard 4.0 GPA scale where letter grades convert to quality points. Your GPA is calculated by dividing total quality points by total credit hours attempted.
Here’s Auburn’s official grading scale:
- A = 4.0 quality points per credit hour
- B = 3.0 quality points per credit hour
- C = 2.0 quality points per credit hour
- D = 1.0 quality points per credit hour
- F = 0.0 quality points per credit hour
The formula is:
GPA = (Total Quality Points) ÷ (Total Credit Hours)
Example: You take 4 courses. ENGL 1100 (3 credits, A = 12 quality points), MATH 1610 (4 credits, B = 12 quality points), HIST 1010 (3 credits, B = 9 quality points), BIOL 1020 (4 credits, C = 8 quality points).
Total quality points: 12 + 12 + 9 + 8 = 41. Total credits: 3 + 4 + 3 + 4 = 14. GPA = 41 ÷ 14 = 2.93.
Plus and Minus Grades at Auburn
Auburn does NOT use plus or minus grades for GPA calculation. An A-, A, and A+ all equal 4.0. A B-, B, and B+ all equal 3.0. This simplifies calculations compared to other universities.
Understanding Your Auburn GPA
Term GPA vs. Cumulative GPA
Term GPA covers only the current semester. Cumulative GPA includes all Auburn courses you’ve ever taken. Both matter, but for different reasons.
Auburn uses cumulative GPA for academic standing, graduation requirements, and honors. You need a 2.0 cumulative to graduate, 3.0+ for Dean’s List, and 3.5+ for President’s List.
Term GPA matters for academic probation warnings. If your term GPA drops below 2.0, you’ll get flagged even if your cumulative is above 2.0. Two consecutive terms below 2.0 can lead to suspension.
What’s a Good GPA at Auburn?
For graduation: 2.0 minimum. Below this, you can’t graduate regardless of credit hours completed.
For good standing: 2.5 to 2.99 keeps you clear of probation with some cushion. You’re eligible for most campus activities and organizations.
For scholarships: 3.0 to 3.49 qualifies for many merit scholarships and keeps institutional aid. Check specific scholarship requirements since some want 3.2 or 3.5.
For honors and grad school: 3.5 to 4.0 makes you competitive for honors programs, prestigious internships, and graduate school applications. Summa cum laude requires 3.9+.
Academic Probation at Auburn
If your cumulative GPA drops below 2.0, you’re placed on academic probation. You’ll have one semester to raise it above 2.0. If you don’t, you face academic suspension. Take this seriously and meet with your advisor immediately if you’re close to this threshold.
Common Questions About Auburn GPA
Where do I find my official Auburn GPA?
Log into AU Access (Auburn’s student portal), then go to Student Center. Your official GPA appears on your academic record. You’ll see both term and cumulative GPA listed separately.
Your transcript also shows GPA, but the Student Center updates faster. Transcripts can lag by a few days after grades post.
Do all courses count toward my Auburn GPA?
Most do, but not all. Courses graded A through F count. Courses marked S (Satisfactory), U (Unsatisfactory), W (Withdrawn), or I (Incomplete) don’t affect GPA calculation.
Transfer credits from other schools don’t count in your Auburn GPA. Only courses taken at Auburn appear in GPA calculations, even if transfer credits count toward your degree.
What happens if I repeat a course at Auburn?
Auburn has grade forgiveness policies. If you repeat a course and earn a higher grade, the new grade replaces the old one in your GPA calculation. The old grade still appears on your transcript but doesn’t count in GPA.
You can only use grade forgiveness for a limited number of courses (usually 3-4 total). Check current Auburn policy since rules change. Not all courses qualify, and you must formally request grade replacement.
How do I calculate what GPA I need next semester?
Use this formula: Required Quality Points = (Desired GPA × Total Credits) – Current Quality Points.
Example: You have 30 credits with a 2.8 cumulative GPA. You want 3.0 after taking 15 more credits. Current quality points = 2.8 × 30 = 84. Needed total = 3.0 × 45 = 135. You need 135 – 84 = 51 quality points from 15 credits. That’s 51 ÷ 15 = 3.4 GPA next term.
Does Auburn round GPAs?
Auburn calculates GPA to three decimal places but typically displays two. A 2.995 GPA does NOT round to 3.0 for official purposes like Dean’s List or graduation honors. You need an actual 3.000 or higher.
Some scholarship committees might round, but don’t count on it. If you need a specific GPA for something important, aim for at least 0.05 above the requirement as a buffer.
What’s the difference between Auburn GPA and overall GPA?
Auburn GPA (also called institutional GPA) includes only Auburn courses. Overall GPA might include transfer work if a scholarship or program requires it. Always check which GPA a requirement refers to.
For Auburn-specific things (graduation, honors, probation), they use Auburn GPA only. For external scholarships or grad school, they might request overall GPA including all college work.
Auburn GPA Examples
Here’s what different course loads and grades produce for GPA:
| Courses & Grades | Credits | Quality Points | GPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 courses, all As | 15 | 60 | 4.00 |
| 4 As, 1 B (3 credit each) | 15 | 57 | 3.80 |
| 3 As, 2 Bs (3 credit each) | 15 | 54 | 3.60 |
| All Bs (5 courses, 3 credit) | 15 | 45 | 3.00 |
| 3 Bs, 2 Cs (3 credit each) | 15 | 39 | 2.60 |
| 2 As, 2 Bs, 1 C, 1 D (various) | 16 | 43 | 2.69 |
Notice how one D or F dramatically drops your GPA when you only have 15-16 credits. The impact lessens as you accumulate more credits.
Auburn-Specific GPA Policies
Dean’s List and President’s List
Dean’s List requires 3.0 to 3.49 GPA with at least 12 graded credit hours that term. President’s List requires 3.5 to 4.0 with at least 12 graded hours. Both appear on your transcript and matter for internships and jobs.
Note the “graded hours” requirement. If you take 15 credits but 4 are S/U graded, you only have 11 graded hours and don’t qualify even with a 4.0.
Latin Honors at Graduation
Cum laude: 3.4 to 3.59, Magna cum laude: 3.6 to 3.89, Summa cum laude: 3.9 to 4.0. These use your Auburn GPA only, and you must complete at least 60 Auburn credit hours to qualify.
Transfer students with fewer than 60 Auburn credits can’t earn Latin honors even with a perfect GPA. Plan accordingly if you transferred in significant credit.
College-Specific Requirements
Some Auburn colleges have higher GPA requirements. Engineering often requires 2.5+ to stay in good standing. Business School requires 2.75+ for certain majors. Education requires 2.5+ to student teach.
Check your specific college’s handbook. University-wide minimums are just baselines. Your major might demand more.
GPA Recovery Strategy
If your GPA is low, take lighter course loads (12-13 hours instead of 15-16) so you can focus on quality over quantity. One semester of straight As at 12 hours beats struggling through 16 hours with Bs and Cs. Slow and steady wins the race toward graduation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get into Auburn with a low high school GPA?
This calculator is for current Auburn students calculating college GPA. For admission questions, contact Auburn’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Generally, Auburn considers high school GPA holistically with test scores and other factors.
What GPA do I need to keep my scholarship?
It varies by scholarship. Auburn Academic Elite requires 3.0+, Presidential requires 3.25+, and some external scholarships have different cutoffs. Check your award letter or contact the Financial Aid office for specifics.
How often does Auburn update GPA?
GPA updates when final grades post each semester, typically within a week of finals ending. Mid-term grades don’t affect your official GPA. Only final grades count.
Can I retake a class to improve my GPA?
Yes, and the higher grade replaces the lower one in GPA calculations (subject to Auburn’s grade forgiveness policy). Both grades appear on your transcript, but only the most recent attempt counts in GPA.
What if I take a class pass/fail?
S (Satisfactory) and U (Unsatisfactory) grades don’t affect GPA. The credits count toward graduation if you earn an S, but they don’t add or subtract from your GPA calculation. Use this strategically for electives outside your comfort zone.
Does summer school count in my Auburn GPA?
Yes. Auburn summer courses count exactly like fall and spring courses. Same credit hours, same quality points, same impact on cumulative GPA.
