JUPEB and IJMB Points Calculator: Direct Entry Points

Pick JUPEB or IJMB, enter your three subjects as grades or marks, and see your total out of 16, with the bonus point for having no F. Add the points your course asks for to see whether you clear it or by how much you fall short.

Enter your subjects

Take this from the university’s Direct Entry page for your course.

Everything is worked out in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Your points

Your result shows up here once you pick your programme and enter three subjects.

The grade table

JUPEB’s grades page and the IJMB FAQ publish the same table. Each subject scores from 5 for an A down to 0 for an F, and you sit three subjects.

The bonus point

JUPEB adds a point to a candidate whose result has no F, which makes AAA worth 16. The IJMB FAQ says most universities award the same bonus point. Because it is a university choice at IJMB, the calculator lets you switch it off. If your target university does not count it, your total drops by one and the highest possible becomes 15.

Five worked examples

Three Cs. Each C is 3 points, so the grades give 9. There is no F, so the bonus point makes it 10. That matches the worked example on JUPEB’s own page.

Three As. 15 from grades, plus the bonus point, is 16, the highest possible.

An IJMB candidate with A, A and B. The grades give 14, and the bonus point makes it 15, the example the IJMB FAQ uses.

One F. A, A and F give 10 from grades. The F removes the bonus point, so the total is 10.

Starting from marks. Marks of 72, 61 and 55 in Biology, Chemistry and Physics are an A, a B and a C. That is 12 points, plus the bonus point, so 13. If the course asks for 14, you are 1 point short.

How many points do you need?

Neither board sets the points a course needs. Each university and department does. The IJMB FAQ gives rough ranges, from about 7 points for arts, education and agriculture, to about 13 to 16 for medicine, pharmacy and law at top schools, and says the University of Abuja asks for 10 for 200 level. Treat those as guides, then find your course on the university’s own Direct Entry page and type its number in the calculator.

What this calculator cannot decide

  • The points your course asks for. You type them in from the university page.
  • Which subject combinations a course accepts. That is in the UTME and Direct Entry brochure.
  • Whether a university counts the bonus point. Check its rules and use the box above.
  • Your admission. Universities run Direct Entry through JAMB and set their own cut-offs.

Mistakes that cost points

Forgetting that an F removes the bonus

One F costs you the F’s points and the bonus point too. A, A and F is 10, not 11.

Counting the bonus when your university does not

At IJMB the bonus is a university choice. If you plan around 16 and the school counts 15, you can miss by one.

Treating an E as safe

An E is a pass, but many competitive universities will not take it. Aim for at least a C in every subject.

Using a points table from another exam

The JAMB score, the WAEC and NECO credits and Direct Entry points are different things. Do not mix them.

Questions students ask

How are JUPEB points calculated?

Each of your three subjects scores A 5, B 4, C 3, D 2, E 1 or F 0. You add the three. JUPEB adds one more point to a candidate whose result has no F. Three Cs give 3 + 3 + 3 + 1 = 10 points.

How are IJMB points calculated?

The grade points are the same as JUPEB, over three subjects. The IJMB FAQ says most universities also award a bonus point when there is no F, which makes 16 the highest possible total.

What is the maximum score?

It is 15 from grades alone (three As) and 16 with the bonus point. JUPEB states AAA as 15 + 1 = 16.

What marks give an A, B, C, D or E?

On both tables, 70 and above is an A, 60 to 69 a B, 50 to 59 a C, 45 to 49 a D, 40 to 44 an E and below 40 an F. Switch the calculator to marks and it converts them for you.

How many points do I need for Direct Entry?

There is no single number. Each university and course sets its own. The IJMB FAQ gives rough ranges, from about 7 for arts and education courses to 13 to 16 for medicine, pharmacy and law at top schools, and says the University of Abuja asks for 10 points for 200 level. Check your course on the university’s page, and type that number into the calculator.

Does an F take away the bonus point?

Yes. Both pages give the bonus to a result with no F. An F is also a fail, and the subject can be resat.

Is an E good enough?

An E is technically a pass, but the IJMB FAQ says many competitive universities will not accept it. It recommends at least a C in every subject.

Does this calculator guarantee admission?

No. Universities set their own cut-offs, can ask for particular subjects, and run Direct Entry admission through JAMB. This page works out your points.

Sources and last review

Both tables are read from the boards’ own pages. JUPEB’s grades page and the IJMB FAQ give the same grade points and mark bands. The points a course needs are not published by either board, so you type them in.
