Answer a few questions about your citizenship, school, admission and documents. The checker says whether you are likely to qualify for a NELFUND student loan, lists what is missing, and gives your next steps.

The four results
| Result | What it means | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Likely | You meet every condition NELFUND publishes and you have the documents. | Open the portal and apply. |
| Check | You look eligible, but you are not sure about your school. | Confirm the school side, then apply. |
| Not yet | Something is missing: admission, your school listing, the records upload or a document. | Fix the items listed, then check again. |
| No | You are outside the Act or the current coverage. | Ask NELFUND or watch for a change. |
What the published rules say
- Who the loan is for. The Act gives loans to qualified Nigerians at approved tertiary academic institutions and vocational and skills acquisition institutions in Nigeria.
- Public institutions first. NELFUND’s Managing Director has said the Fund is addressing the public sector first. In December 2025 he said private university students are not currently eligible and called that temporary.
- No income test, no guarantor. The Act removed the family income threshold and the guarantor requirement. A student cannot be disqualified because of a parent’s loan history.
- One condition on the terms page. You confirm you are not a beneficiary of any other government sponsored scheme, and that the information on the portal is true.
- False information is a crime. The Act makes giving false information to the Fund a felony.
Four worked examples
A student with everything. A Nigerian student admitted to a federal university that is on the list, whose records the school has uploaded, with no other scholarship and all five documents, gets Likely eligible.
A private university student. The same student at a private institution gets Not eligible for now. NELFUND’s Managing Director said in December 2025 that private university students are not currently eligible, and called the exclusion temporary. In May 2025 he said the Fund could look at private institutions after two to three years.
A student with gaps. Take the first student again, but without a NIN or BVN, and with the school not yet having uploaded records. The result is Not yet, with 2 documents listed as missing and the school upload named as a blocker.
A student who is not sure about the list. If the school listing is unknown, the result is Check the school side. Your next step is: Check whether your school is on the approved list on the NELFUND portal, or ask your school.
Documents and the school upload
NELFUND’s terms page does not list the documents you need. Application guides name your NIN, your BVN, your matriculation number (or JAMB registration number if you are new), your admission letter, and a bank account in your name that matches your BVN. Treat that list as guide-reported and check it on the portal. Guides also say your school must upload your records to NELFUND’s student verification system before you can apply, and that only the school can do it.
What this checker cannot decide
- Whether your school is on the approved list today. The list changes, so check the portal.
- Whether your programme or level is covered. The Act summary does not name programme levels.
- Whether your scholarship counts as a government sponsored scheme. Ask NELFUND in writing.
- Whether your application is approved. NELFUND decides that.
Mistakes that cost time
Treating a private school as a maybe
Private institutions are outside the loan for now. Do not plan a session’s fees around it until NELFUND says that has changed.
Applying before your school uploads your records
If your records are not on NELFUND’s system, your application cannot be verified. Ask the registry first.
Names that do not match
Guides report that a spelling difference between your NIN, BVN and school records can delay verification. Fix it at the source before you apply.
Using a lookalike website
Several sites copy NELFUND’s name. Apply only through the official NELFUND portal, and never pay anyone to get you a loan.
Questions students ask
Who is eligible for the NELFUND student loan?
The Act gives loans to qualified Nigerians at approved tertiary and vocational institutions in Nigeria. NELFUND’s terms add that you must not be a beneficiary of another government sponsored scheme. In practice, NELFUND’s Managing Director has said the loan is for public institutions for now.
Can private university students get the loan?
Not at the moment. The Managing Director said in December 2025 that private university students are not currently eligible, and called the exclusion temporary. In May 2025 he said private institutions could be considered after two to three years. The law may need to change first.
Is there a family income limit?
No. The Act summary says the family income threshold has been removed. A guarantor is not required either, and a student cannot be turned down because of a parent’s loan history.
What documents do I need?
Application guides list your NIN, your BVN, your matriculation number or JAMB registration number, your admission letter, and a bank account in your name that matches your BVN. NELFUND’s terms page does not list them, so treat that list as guide-reported and check it on the portal.
Why does my school have to upload my records?
Guides report that your institution must upload your records to NELFUND’s student verification system before you can apply. If it has not, ask your registry or student affairs office. You cannot do this step yourself.
Do I need to apply every year?
Guides report that eligibility is checked again each session, so plan to apply again. Confirm this on the portal when you apply.
Does holding another scholarship stop me?
NELFUND’s terms ask you to confirm you are not a beneficiary of any other government sponsored scheme. If you hold one, ask NELFUND in writing before you apply, and do not give false information, because the Act makes that a felony.
Does this checker guarantee a loan?
No. NELFUND approves loans and your school must be on its list. This page tells you what to sort out before you apply.
