Pick each qualification and its grade, and see how many UCAS Tariff points it is worth. The numbers come from UCAS’s own tables, and the page shows the date we last checked them. You can count only your best few, and check the total against an offer.

Count only my best, or check an offer
Leave empty to count everything. Many universities count the best three.

Your UCAS points
Your points show up here once you pick a qualification and a grade.
What to enter
- Qualification and grade
- Pick the qualification from the list, then the grade you have or expect. The grade list shows the points beside each one, so you can see what a step up is worth.
- Subject
- Optional. Add it if you want the page to warn you when you have an AS and an A level in the same subject, because universities usually count only the higher one.
- Count only my best
- Optional. Some universities only count a set number of qualifications, often the best three. Enter that number and the page adds up only your highest.
- An offer in points
- Optional. If a university gave you its offer as points, enter it and the page shows whether you meet it and by how much.
Common A level offers in points
These are the A level grade combinations most often seen in offers, with the points they add up to.
| Grades | UCAS points |
|---|---|
| A*A*A* | 168 |
| AAA | 144 |
| AAB | 136 |
| ABB | 128 |
| BBB | 120 |
| BBC | 112 |
| BCC | 104 |
| CCC | 96 |
A worked example
Here is a made-up student with A levels in Maths (A), Physics (B) and Chemistry (B), and an Extended Project at A.
| Qualification | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|
| A level in Maths | A | 48 |
| A level in Physics | B | 40 |
| A level in Chemistry | B | 40 |
| Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) | A | 24 |
| Total | 152 |
All four add up to 152 points. A university that counts only the best three qualifications would use 128 points, because the Extended Project is the lowest-scoring of the four. The same student with three A levels only has 128 points, so it pays to check what a university counts.
BTEC and IB compared
A BTEC National Extended Diploma at DDM is worth 128 points. Three A levels at AAC are worth 128, so the points match. They are different qualifications, though, and a university may ask for one over the other.
For the International Baccalaureate, here is a made-up set: Higher Level 7, 6 and 6, Standard Level 6, 6 and 5, an Extended Essay at B and Theory of Knowledge at A. Adding the points UCAS published in 2017 gives 238 points. UCAS’s current tables don’t list the IB, so check the course page.

How the points are calculated
- Each grade is looked up in the UCAS Tariff table for that qualification and gives a fixed number of points.
- The points for every qualification you add are added together.
- If you choose to count only your best few, the page sorts your qualifications from most to fewest points and adds up that many.
- If you add an offer, the total is compared with it.
UCAS points = the sum of the Tariff points for each qualification and grade
Assumptions to keep in mind
- The points come from the UCAS 2026 Tariff tables, checked on 3 October 2026. The 2027 tables hold the same values for these qualifications.
- The International Baccalaureate points come from UCAS’s 2017 Tariff tables, because the current tables do not list the IB. Treat them as a guide and check the course page.
- Universities choose which qualifications and how many points to count, and a qualification having Tariff points does not mean every course will accept it.
- Most offers are written as grades, like AAB, not points. This page is for the courses that do use points.
- Only some qualifications are included. If yours is missing, use the official UCAS calculator or ask the university.
Mistakes that give the wrong total
Adding an AS next to an A level in the same subject
UCAS says universities generally count only the higher level in the same subject. If you did Maths at AS and then at A level, only the A level normally counts.
Counting more qualifications than the university does
Some universities only count the best three A levels or Highers. If you add a fourth subject, your total here can be higher than the number the university uses.
Assuming every course uses points
Many courses give offers as grades, not points. If your offer says AAB, that is what you need, even if the points add up to the same total another way.
Using the wrong BTEC
The Extended Certificate, the Foundation Diploma, the Diploma and the Extended Diploma are different sizes and earn different points. Check the title on your certificate.
Trusting a points total for an IB offer
Many universities state IB offers as an IB score out of 45, or as Higher Level grades. The points here come from the 2017 tables, so check what the course page asks for.
Questions students ask
How many UCAS points is an A*?
An A* at A level is worth 56 UCAS Tariff points, an A is 48, a B is 40, a C is 32, a D is 24 and an E is 16. These are from the UCAS 2026 Tariff tables.
How many UCAS points is AAB?
AAB at A level is 136 points. It is the sum of the points for each grade, which is 48, 48 and 40.
Do all universities use UCAS points?
No. UCAS says some universities and colleges use Tariff points in their entry requirements, but many base offers on qualifications and grades. Check the entry requirements for the course. This is also why a points total on its own may not tell you whether you meet an offer.
Do AS levels count?
They have points, but UCAS says universities generally count only the highest level of achievement. An AS in the same subject as your A level normally won’t be counted on top of it. An AS in a different subject might be, depending on the university.
What about the IB?
The current UCAS tables do not list the International Baccalaureate. The page uses the points UCAS published in its 2017 tables, where a Higher Level 7 is worth 56 points. Many universities state IB offers as an IB score, so check the course page.
