Common Weighted GPA Mistakes
Quick Answers
How This Weighted GPA Calculator Works
A weighted GPA gives extra grade points to harder courses. AP and IB classes add 1.0 to the standard grade point value. Honors classes add 0.5. Regular courses use the standard 4.0 scale.
Weighted GPA = Sum of (Weighted Points x Credits) / Total Credits
Where Weighted Points = Standard Grade Points + Course Bonus
AP/IB bonus: +1.0 | Honors bonus: +0.5 | Regular: +0.0
So an A in an AP class gives you 5.0 points (4.0 + 1.0). An A in a regular class stays at 4.0. This calculator shows you both the weighted GPA and the unweighted GPA side by side, because both matter.
Weighted vs Unweighted GPA: What Is the Difference?
Unweighted GPA treats every course the same. AP, Honors, and regular classes all max out at 4.0. Weighted GPA rewards you for taking harder classes by going above 4.0. The maximum is usually 5.0, though some schools cap it at 4.5.
| Course Type | Grade Received | Unweighted Points | Weighted Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular | A | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| Honors | A | 4.0 | 4.5 |
| AP / IB | A | 4.0 | 5.0 |
| Regular | B | 3.0 | 3.0 |
| Honors | B | 3.0 | 3.5 |
| AP / IB | B | 3.0 | 4.0 |
| AP / IB | C | 2.0 | 3.0 |

| 3 AP A’s, 1 AP C | 3.50 | 4.50 |
Do Colleges Look at Weighted or Unweighted GPA?
Most colleges look at both. Your weighted GPA signals course rigor. Your unweighted GPA signals consistency. Highly selective schools like the Ivies and flagship state universities typically recalculate your GPA themselves using their own formula, so neither number on your transcript is the final word.
What matters more than either number is the trend. Colleges want to see that you challenged yourself with hard courses and still performed well. A 3.8 unweighted with 6 AP classes is a stronger application than a 4.0 unweighted with zero advanced coursework.
Weighted GPA Scale Reference
| Weighted GPA | What It Suggests | College Profile |
|---|---|---|
| 4.5 – 5.0 | Outstanding | Highly selective schools, Ivy pipeline |
| 4.0 – 4.49 | Strong | Top 50 universities, flagship state schools |
| 3.5 – 3.99 | Competitive | Most four-year colleges, merit scholarships |
| 3.0 – 3.49 | Average | Broad access to four-year colleges |
| Below 3.0 | Needs Work | Community college, open enrollment programs |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 4.0 weighted GPA good?
A 4.0 weighted GPA is good, but it depends on context. If you’re taking mostly regular classes, a 4.0 weighted equals a 4.0 unweighted, which means you’re doing well but not taking advanced coursework. If you’re taking several AP classes and still hitting 4.0 weighted, that is a genuinely strong result.
What is the highest possible weighted GPA?
On the standard 5.0 scale, the highest possible weighted GPA is 5.0. That requires straight A’s in all AP or IB courses. In practice, most students in all-AP schedules land between 4.2 and 4.8 weighted.
Do Honors classes boost GPA more than AP?
No. AP and IB classes typically give +1.0 boost. Honors classes give +0.5. An A in AP gives 5.0 points. An A in Honors gives 4.5 points. AP gives the bigger bump, which is why students who want to maximize weighted GPA often prioritize AP over Honors.
What if my school uses a 4.5 scale instead of 5.0?
Some schools cap AP/IB at 4.5 and Honors at 4.0 instead. Use the scale selector at the top of the calculator to match your school’s policy. If you are unsure, ask your school counselor which scale your transcript uses.
Should I take AP classes just to raise my GPA?
Only if you can realistically earn a B or higher. A C in AP on a 5.0 scale gives 3.0 weighted points but only 2.0 unweighted. If you take five AP classes and struggle in all of them, your unweighted GPA will suffer. Colleges see that number too.
